2016 – 100th Anniversary of the Apparitions of the Angel of Portugal to the three children of Fatima

fatima1As we are approaching the year 2016, it has been nearly 100 years since the Apparition of the Angel of Portugal to the three children of Fatima in 1916. (Read the story below.)

The Angel of Portugal had taught the three children of Fatima how to pray properly and show reverence to God in prayer.

May we too, learn to show proper reverence to God in prayer, by imitating the three children and frequently reciting the following prayer taught by the Angel:

“My God, I believe, I adore, I hope, and I love You. I ask pardon for those who do not believe, do not adore, do not hope, and do not love You. Most Holy Trinity, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, I adore You profoundly, and I offer You the Most Precious Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of Jesus Christ, present in all the tabernacles of the world, in reparation for the outrages, sacrileges and indifferences by which He is offended. And by the infinite merits of His most Sacred Heart and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, I beg the conversion of poor sinners.”

It is recommend that one recites this prayer each time before receiving Holy Communion, in order to prepare one’s own soul for receiving the Body and Blood of Jesus.

The frequent recitation of the Angel’s prayer is also recommend, in order to make reparations for the sins of mankind done against our Lord, the outrages, sacrileges and indifferences by which He is offended, and the widespread desecration of the Eucharist.

We should also make use of the Angels’ prayer to pray unceasingly for the conversion of poor sinners.

“Many souls go to Hell because few pray and do penance for them.” – Our Lady of Fatima (1917)

Apparitions of the Angel of Portugal to the three children of Fatima (1916)

Among the Catholic faithful, it is well known that the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to three children, Lucia Santos, Jacinta Marto and Francisco Marto, six times during the year of 1917, in Fatima, Portugal. The Apparitions of Our Lady of Fatima ended with the Miracle of the Sun on October 13, 1917.

It is less commonly known that the Angel of Portugal had appeared to the three children earlier, a year before the apparitions of the Blessed Virgin Mary – i.e. in 1916.

In 1916, the Angel of Portugal visited the three children, three times, in order to prepare them to receive Our Lady of Fatima the following year.

fatima2The First Apparition of the Angel

On the day of the first visit of the Angel, in the spring of 1916, the three children were leading their sheep to graze on a plot of land owned by Lucia’s parents.

On that morning, it was drizzling. The three children climbed the hill, followed by their sheep, in search of a rock that would shelter them. Once, they found shelter, they ate their lunches and began to say the Rosary. After that, they started playing a game with pebbles. A few minutes later, a strong wind began to shake the trees. The three children then saw, in the distance, a light whiter than snow, in the form of a young man, quite transparent, and as brilliant as crystal in the rays of the sun.

As the Angel came nearer, the children were able to see his features. The children were astonished and said nothing to one another.

The Angel spoke:

“Do not be afraid. I am the Angel of Peace. Pray with me.”

The Angel knelt, bending his forehead to the ground. With a supernatural impulse, the children did the same, repeating the words they heard the Angel say:

“My God, I believe, I adore, I hope, and I love You. I ask pardon for those who do not believe, do not adore, do not hope, and do not love You.”

After repeating this prayer three times, the Angel rose and said to the three children:

“Pray in this way. The hearts of Jesus and Mary are ready to listen to you.”

Then the Angel disappeared.

The presence of God was so powerful and intimate that the children could not speak amongst themselves afterwards.

Lucia wrote in her memoirs about this first apparition of the Angel:

“His words sank so deeply into our minds that we never forgot them, and ever after we used to spend long periods on our knees repeating them, sometimes until we fell down exhausted.”

The Second Apparition of the Angel

Some time during the summer of 1916, the three children were playing in the heat of the day, in the garden near the well behind Lucia’s home.

There, the Angel appeared to the three children again, chastising them for their lack of spiritual seriousness.

The Angel said:

“What are you doing? You must pray! Pray! The hearts of Jesus and Mary have merciful designs for you. You must offer your prayers and sacrifices to God, the Most High.”

“But how are we to sacrifice?” Lucia asked.

“In every way you can offer sacrifice to God in reparation for the sins by which He is offended, and in supplication for sinners. In this way you will bring peace to our country, for I am its guardian angel, the Angel of Portugal. Above all, bear and accept with patience the sufferings God will send you.”

Lucia wrote in her memoirs about this second apparition of the Angel:

“The Angels’ words sank deeply into our souls like a gleaming torch, showing us Who God is, what is His love for us, and how he wants us to love Him too; the value of sacrifice and how it pleases Him; how He receives it for the conversion of sinners. That is why from that moment we began to offer Him whatever mortified us.”

The Third Apparition of the Angel

Some time in late September or in October 1916, the three children were tending sheep again and praying the prayer that the Angel had taught them:

“My God, I believe, I adore, I hope, and I love You. I ask pardon for those who do not believe, do not adore, do not hope, and do not love You.”

After repeating this prayer, they saw a strange light shining over them. They lifted their heads and saw the Angel, holding in his left hand a chalice, and over it, in the air, was a host from which drops of blood fell into the chalice.

The Angel left the chalice in the air, knelt near the children, and told them to repeat three times:

“Most Holy Trinity, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, I adore You profoundly, and I offer You the Most Precious Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of Jesus Christ, present in all the tabernacles of the world, in reparation for the outrages, sacrileges and indifferences by which He is offended. And by the infinite merits of His most Sacred Heart and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, I beg the conversion of poor sinners.”

After that the Angel rose and took in his hand the chalice and the Sacred Host. The Angel gave the Sacred Host to Lucia on her tongue, while he shared the Blood of the Chalice between Jacinta and Francisco.

The Angel said to them:

“Eat and drink the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ terribly outraged by the ingratitude of men. Offer reparation for their sakes and console God.”

The Angel of Portugal was teaching the three children the proper way of receiving our Lord in the Eucharist – i.e. kneeling down reverently in prayer, and receiving the Body and Blood of Jesus.

Then once more, the Angel bowed to the ground repeating with the children the same prayer thrice:

“Most Holy Trinity, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, I adore You profoundly, and I offer You the Most Precious Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of Jesus Christ, present in all the tabernacles of the world, in reparation for the outrages, sacrileges and indifferences by which He is offended. And by the infinite merits of His most Sacred Heart and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, I beg the conversion of poor sinners.”

Then the Angel disappeared.

Overwhelmed by the supernatural atmosphere, the three children imitated the Angel in everything, kneeling prostrate as he did and repeating the prayers he said.

It was in this way: catechized in prayer, reparative suffering, and the doctrine of the Holy Eucharist, and strengthened by the Bread of Angels, that the children of Fatima were prepared for the visitation of the Queen of Portugal, the Immaculate Virgin Mary in 1917.
